AFFIXATION

INTRODUCTION THE FORM OF AFFIXATION

Affixes are letters or groups of letters added to a word to change its meaning or the way it is used.
In English, there are two kinds of affixes:
1. Prefixes, those that are put at the beginning of a word.
There are three kinds of prefix:
• Numbers prefixes
e.g. mono-, uni-, du-, bi-, di-, tri-,quad-, quat-, penta-, quint-, sext-, hexa-, sept-, octa-, nona-, deca-, cent-, poly-, multi-.
• Negatives prefixes
e.g. il-, im-, in- ,ir-, un-, non-, anti-, dis-, mis-, ab-, mal-.
• Relationship prefixes
e.g. ambi-, pre-, fore-, ante-, post-, inter-, trans-, intra-, sur-, sub-, peri-, sym-, co-, extra-, proto-, ultra-.
2. Suffixes, those that are put at the end of a word.
There are four kinds of suffix:
• Noun suffixes
e.g. –tion, -sion, -ment, -ness, -ity, -ence, -ance, -cy, -acy, -cracy.
• Person suffixes
e.g. –er, -eer, -or, -ator, -es.
• Verb suffixes
e.g. –fy, -ify, -ise, -ize, -en.
• Adjective suffixes
e.g. –ate, -ic, -fic, -ish, -ive, -ative, -y
• Adverb suffixes
e.g. ly

How to use affixation in a sentence:
1. Check a word in the dictionary to fix every word that will be used.
2. Use it based on context and the structure of the word. It is because affixation can change the meaning of word.
3. Add the affixation in a word that we will used based on context.

DISCUSSION

We take the fourth paragraph from the article of ‘Something to Chew on’:

Aids in weight in control
Because it is not digested, fiber provides very few calories. It also provides bulk. This increases satiety and therefore prevents overeating, especially when meals are eaten slowly. In other words, fiber-rich foods are more filling, so people tend to eat less. Fiber-rich foods generally require more chewing time, which also gives your body more time to register when you are no longer hungry. Fiber-rich foods tend to make a meal stay longer in your body, so you stay full longer. Fiber may also slow the absorption of calorie-dense dietary fat.

Karena tidak dicerna, makanan berserat hanya menyediakan sedikit kalori. Selain itu juga sangat besar khasiatnya. Hal ini menambah tingkat kekenyangan dan oleh karena itu dapat mencegah makan yang berlebihan, terutama, ketika makanan dimakan secara perlahan. Dengan kata lain, makanan berserat tinggi lebih mengenyangkan, jadi orang cenderung makan lebih sedikit. Pada umumnya, makanan –makanan berserat tinggi membutuhkan waktu mengunyah yang lebih lama, yang juga memberi tubuhmu waktu lebih banyak untuk memproses ketika kamu tidak lagi lapar. Makanan-makanan berserat tinggi cenderung membuat makanan bertahan lama di dalam tubuhmu, jadi kamu akan tetap kenyang lebih lama. Serat juga dapat memperlambat penyerapan kalori-kalori yang besar dalam pencegahan kegemukan.





How to translate an affixation:

1. Choose a word and find its root.
2. If there is any affix, identify the type of affix, whether it forms any part of speech (verb, noun, adjective, etc).
3. Relate the meaning of root with the form of affix to create the right meaning in the second language.
Example: Generally
root: general: ‘umum’
affix: -ly (affix which forms adverb)
generally: ‘secara umum’ or ‘pada umumnya’
